Signs that your garage door needs replacing
Whilst most garage doors are made to last there comes a time when even the sturdiest door will become a little worse for wear. This decay can happen so gradually that many home owners don’t notice it straight away. Carrying out regular maintenance check on your door will really help to lengthen its life but sometimes it’s too late. So, what are the signs that a garage door needs replacing?
Rust
Rust is a garage door disease that spreads quickly if not caught early. Always oil the moving parts of your garage door with a lubricant like WD40. This can help stop rust
developing and will ensure that your door operation is smooth. If rust has developed then you can try to sand the rust off and paint the door with special garage door paint. This should work if the rust spots are quite small and may give you another couple of years out of your door. However, if the door mechanisms are rusty and large rust spots have appeared on the door itself then it is probably time to invest in a new one!
Cosmetics
Whilst chipping or cracked paint doesn’t necessarily mean the end of your garage door it is
a good indicator of the way your door is heading. Other cosmetic garage door problems include dirt, faded paint and moss growing around the opening. These problems can be solved fairly easily providing they are dealt with quickly. However if not treated, chipped paint can quickly give way to rust. Many people also like to replace their garage door every so often for something more modern and fashionable in the same way that they redecorate their house.
Mechanics
The mechanics of your door are the heart that keeps it beating. Bowed runners, bent arms and bumps in the door panels can all hinder the operation of the door and usually cost a lot to repair. If any metal part loses its shape or becomes damaged it is usually quite difficult to rescue and is therefore a sign that a new door might be needed.
